The Honest Picture
India hosts roughly 10 million foreign visitors a year. The vast majority leave with stories of warmth, hospitality and life-changing experiences — not safety problems. That said, India is not Switzerland: there are scams, traffic chaos, and a cultural gap that catches first-timers out. The single biggest factor in your safety is how you travel.
Private Tour vs Independent Travel
On a private tailor-made tour you have:
- A vetted English-speaking driver who knows the routes
- A trained guide at every city — no need to negotiate with strangers
- Pre-booked, well-rated 4-star+ hotels with security
- Bottled water and recommended restaurants
- A 24×7 emergency hotline
This is dramatically safer than backpacker-style independent travel.
Common Scams to Know About
- Fake government tourist offices near New Delhi station — always use your concierge.
- Auto-rickshaw "broken meter" — agree fare in advance, or use Uber/Ola.
- "Your hotel is closed" said by drivers wanting commission elsewhere — call your operator.
- Free temple flowers/bracelets followed by demand for money — politely decline.
On our private tours, none of these touch you because you never need to deal with random drivers or hawkers without a guide present.
Women Travellers
Solo and small-group female travellers absolutely can and do enjoy India safely — millions do every year. We recommend:
- Private tour rather than budget/group travel
- Modest dress (cover shoulders and knees in temples; long trousers/skirts work everywhere)
- Avoid empty streets after dark in unfamiliar areas
- Female guides available on request in major cities
Food and Water
- Drink only sealed bottled water (we provide a fresh bottle daily)
- Eat at hotel restaurants and our recommended places
- Skip salads and ice unless at 5-star hotels
- Street food is wonderful — but only with a guide and at vetted spots
- Bring basic medication (Imodium, electrolytes) just in case
Health Preparation
Consult your travel doctor 6–8 weeks before departure. Typical recommendations: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus update. Malaria tablets only for specific rural/wildlife regions. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential.
Traffic and Transport
Indian traffic looks chaotic but works. On a private tour you are always in an air-conditioned car with a professional driver. We never put clients in tuk-tuks or local trains without an escort.
The Bottom Line
India is safe for European travellers when you travel right. A private tailor-made tour, well-rated hotels, vetted guides, sensible precautions — and you are far more likely to come home raving than stressed.
